Stephanie Cook is an award-winning artist who works both in pastel and oil. She is a life-long artist and art educator, who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts from Boston University. She has continued studying in classes and workshops with notable artists such as Desmond O’Hagen, Elizabeth Mowry, Rosalie Nadeau, Richard McKinley, Elizabeth Haywood-Sullivan, Doug Dawson, Joe Hing Lowe, Jean Rosier Smith and Barbara Jaenicke.  She is a classically trained artist whose paintings are in the tradition of realism. She retired from teaching art after 27 years. Her last position was at Teaneck High School. She has since pursued painting full-time in her home studio and has entered and been accepted into many juried exhibition and won numerous awards. She currently serves on the Board of the Pastel Society of New Jersey and is co-chair of exhibitions. She is also an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a member of the Connecticut Pastel Society. She presently resides in Mahwah, NJ.

Stephanie has always been interested in art so drawing and painting are a natural part of her life. She is excited to guide and inspire her students in order to discover and develop their own creative voices. She works mainly in soft pastel and occasionally in oil. She is inspired by the world around her and works mostly from life, whether plein air (outdoors) or in her studio working on still lifes. She is fascinated by the beauty of how light transforms what we see, whether an object, a tree, a hillside, or a face. This is evident in her work.

In class, students are encouraged to choose from the still lifes that are set up or to work from their own photo references. The focus will be on improving drawing skills, technique, composition, use light and shadow, and color and value in order to create successful paintings. Individual help and attention will be given. All levels are welcome.
