Kate Hall began her studies in oil painting at the Ridgewood Art Institute in 1991 under the instruction of John Osborne. In 2001, she completed her BFA at the Rhode Island School of Design and began a career as a decorative painter and muralist, working in New Jersey, New York and California. She has served on the RAI Board of Trustees since 2010 and spent several years working with kids in Laura Paray’s and Charlotte Sullivan’s young people’s classes before starting her own class.
Kate has a real love of painting in the beautiful north lit studios of the RAI and of painting outdoors. The flow of light over still life, portrait and landscape is the subject of her artwork and the focus of her teaching. She feels it is important for students to gain confidence in their skills by working directly from life. Each student receives individualized instruction as they learn the basics of oil painting from color mixing and brushwork to the “massing” of light and shadow to create form.
The foundation in traditional realism Kate acquired as a young person at the RAI has served her throughout her life and career as a painter. Kate strives to help her students build the same strong foundations that will support them as they develop into young artists.
